Darkness cloaked the room, a black so deep it seemed to have a life of its own. Addie blinked but the absence of light was so complete it didn’t matter if she opened her eyes or kept them closed. Her sense of self-preservation forced her to keep them open on the off chance she might see the threat coming.

“Wade,” she called out into the black void, despising the quaver she could hear in her own voice, but unable to shake the instinctive fear that came with the dark. “Can you turn on the light?” Her question wavered uncertainly, the lack of a response sending a shudder through her. “Haha, super funny, Wade. Where are you?”

Nothing moved, not a whisper of sound penetrated the black as Addie stood still, her legs refusing to move, as she desperately waited in vain for her eyes to adjust.

“Is this a dream?” She spoke aloud, the sound of her own voice comforting, even as her question echoed oddly, almost muffled inside the dark. “Anyone,” she choked, forcing her feet forward in a slow shuffle as she held her arms out in front of her. She continued this slow walk, feeling for a wall, or a change in the air, a sound to indicate she was somewhere.

But there was nothing.

Her breathing came faster, shorter as time crept on in the vacant dark, and she kept moving but nothing ever changed.

“Help me! Someone,” she cried, dropping to her knees as her breathing became faster and more panicked.

“No one is coming for you, little truthseeker.” The barest brush of a hand skimming across her hair tore a scream from her throat as laughter surrounded her.

“Addie. Addie. Baby. Wake up.” Strong arms shook her hard and her eyes snapped open only to see more darkness, the bedroom pitch-black.

“Light,” she gasped, the word barely a stutter. Jake quickly leaned over her, snapping the lamp on and flooding the room with light. Banging on the door caused her to jump as Danny’s voice came through.

“You okay in there?”

“Yeah,” Jake called out distractedly, his eyes never leaving Addie’s face. “Addie had a nightmare. I think.”

“That must of have been one hell of a nightmare.” They heard him mutter as his heavy tread moved away from the door.

“It was a nightmare,” Jake stated carefully, brushing back the long strands of her hair that had begun to stick to her face as sweat dried on her skin. “Tell me about it.”

“It was dark,” she said simply, the words hollow in her throat. “So dark. There was nothing there and, it went on for forever.”

“And then,” Jake prompted, carefully erasing any hint of a question from his voice.

“He said, “No one is coming for you, little truthseeker.” Her voice was bleak and Jake gathered her in his arms as she shuddered.

“Just a dream,” he murmured, rocking her. “Just a bad, bad dream.” He squeezed tighter as she clung to him, neither wanting to acknowledge there was a very real possibility it was far more than just a dream.
